Who we serve
PYDA primarily targets unemployed matriculants (Grade 12 graduates), aged 18 to 25, from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. This demographic is a focal point for our efforts due to several critical factors affecting youth unemployment in South Africa.
Why the Age Group
Youth unemployment in South Africa is a pressing issue, with the national rate for those aged 15-24 at approximately 60%. This age group is crucial as it represents a critical transition from education to the workforce. Without targeted intervention, these young individuals risk long-term unemployment, leading to a cycle of poverty. PYDA focuses on this age group to bridge the gap between education and employment, providing necessary vocational training and personal development support to enhance their employability.
Why “Historically Disadvantaged”
“Historically disadvantaged” refers to those who were systematically excluded under apartheid policies, including Black, Coloured, and Indian populations. These individuals often face challenges such as limited access to quality education and economic opportunities. PYDA addresses these systemic inequities by providing targeted support to young people from these communities, ensuring they have the opportunities and resources needed to succeed.
By focusing on unemployed matriculants aged 18 to 25 from historically disadvantaged backgrounds, PYDA addresses immediate unemployment challenges and contributes to broader socio-economic transformation. Our programmes equip these young individuals with the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed to overcome historical barriers, fostering a generation of empowered, skilled, and economically active youth ready to lead positive change in their communities and beyond.
